يوصي علماء وباحثون بريطانيون في مجال الحياة البرية والحيوانات بإعدام نصف الغزلان البرية الموجودة في بريطانيا، بعد أن وصلت أعدادها لأكثر من مليون ونصف حيوان.
وقد تتسببت الغزلان في بريطانيا في إتلاف مساحات شاسعة من الغابات البريطانية والمزارع، علاوة على دورها في إلحاق الضرر بآلاف السيارات سنويا في حوادث سيرو مقتل وإصابة المئات ، حسب إحصاءات بعض اكاديميات المختصة .
وتقول الباحثة في جامعة "شرق أنغليا" البريطانية Christine Wiper - كريستين وايبر في تصريحات : إذا تركنا الغزلان تتكاثر بشكل طبيعي فمعنى ذلك أننا سنخسر مساحات أكبر من الغابات لأن الغزلان سوف تأكلها. أعتقد أنه يجب إعدام من 50 إلى 60 % منها حتى نحدث التوازن".
وأضافت Christine Wiper وايبر أن الغزلان تخل بالتوازن البيئي في بريطانيا عن طريق التهام كميات كبيرة من الطعام، ما يجبر أنواعا أخرى من الطيور على الهجرة، ومنها Nightingales العنادل التي أصبحت نادرة في بريطانيا.
وفي Vetford "ذيتفورد" - إحدى أكبر الغابات في بريطانيا - يوجد نحو 14 ألف من الغزلان في مساحة 52 فدان، ويقتل منها سنويا نحو ألفي حيوان.
ويقول خبير الحياة البرية في هذه الغابة Trevor - تريفور بانهام: "علينا أن نحاول السيطرة على هذه الأعداد. لو تركناها فسوف تخرج عن السيطرة فعلا. إعدام أعداد كبيرة منها بات أمرا ضروريا".
لكن إعدام الحيوانات بشكل عام يعد قرارا غير مرحب به من قبل الجمعية الملكية للحد من سوء معاملة الحيوانات، إلا إذا كان هناك "دليل قوي" على أضرارها.
